    IMEMO RAN and Korean Association of Slavic Studies (KASS, Republic of Korea) held a joint international conference "The Results of the Russia-Korea Summit in Seoul and Its Implementation".
    The participants of the Conference discussed issues related to the main agenda of the Russian-South Korean summit in Seoul, Russia's role in the peace process in Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula. Special attention was paid to the prospects of Russian-South Korean cooperation in the development of the Russian Far East and the modernization of the Russian economy.

    IMEMO RAN hosted the conference titled "Middle East: Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons". It was the thirteenth conference (the second one for 2013) of the joint project "The Prospects of Multilateralizing Nuclear Disarmament Process" implemented by IMEMO and the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Inc.

    IMEMO RAN presented a brochure titled “Korean Nuclear Crisis: Prospects of De-escalation” that was a part of the joint project of IMEMO RAN-NTI (Nuclear Threat Initiative, Inc.).
    The presentation looked at major findings of discussions and analysis of the scope for and prospects of resolving the crisis around North Korea’s nuclear programme as outlined at the conference held at IMEMO RAN on March 28, 2013 and in the brochure released in follow-up to the conference. Due to the topicality of the issue at hand, the presentation drew exceptional interest, gathering around 70 participants. The discussion touched upon a wide range of issues related to North Korea’s domestic, foreign and military policy analyzed in the brochure. The conclusions of the study attracted particular attention of the participants. The presentation included an intensive exchange of opinion on a wide range of issues related to the strengthening of the non-proliferation regime.

    IMEMO RAN presented SIPRI Yearbook 2013 Armaments, Disarmament and International Security (in Russian). At the presentation the Russian SIPRI Yearbook 2013 was introduced that was published as a part of the joint project by IMEMO RAN and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The participants in the discussion touched upon a wide range of international and national security issues, the prospects for further nuclear arms reductions and strengthening of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

    The scientific conference organized jointly with the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IWEP CASS) was held at IMEMO RAS. The event was held within the framework of joint research project “China’s Globalization and its Impact on World Economy and Politics. Conclusions and Suggestions for Russo-Chinese Relations. Views from Moscow and Beijing”, supported by the Russian Foundation for Humanities and CASS.

    The international conference “Typology of conflicts: "New wars" and the situation in the Middle East”, prepared together with International Comittee of the Red Cross, was held on 17 June 2013 in the Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Russian Academy of sciences (IMEMO RAS), Moscow. Russian and foreign specialists on the Middle East region, problems of security and humanitarian activities expressed their opinions during the working session. Opening speech was performed by deputy-head of IMEMO RAS Vladimir Baranovsky and head of the ICRC Regional delegation Juan Luis Coderque Galligo.

    “KINU-IMEMO International Conference on Korean Peninsula,” joint Russian-Korean conference was held in IMEMO on March 26, 2013. Discussions at the conference focused on to share perspectives of Russian experts and Korean experts, to discuss about the new administrations’ policies toward North Korea, to deepen mutual understanding about Korea-Russia Relations.

    March 18-19, 2013
    A joint Russo-Japanese symposium was held in IMEMO on March 18-19, 2013 jointly with the Tokyo-based Council on National Security Problems (ANPOKEN). The symposium continued the tradition of regular meetings of Russian and Japanese experts to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries against the background of developments in the Pacific Asia. Discussions at the symposium focused on international relations in the region and Russia-Japan cooperation on security and economic issues, as well as on prospects of resolving political problems in bilateral relations.

    The Center for Comparative Socio-Economic and Socio-Political Studies held a conference on "The gobal crisis and its consequences: the aggravation of ethnic and sociocultural conflicts". The conference was organized by Prof. Evgheny Gontmakher, IMEMO Deputy Director, and Prof. Nickita Zagladin, Head or Center.

    The IMEMO deputy director Vasily Mikheev took part in the Inaugural Forum of Asan Institute for Policy Studies “Asan Nuclear Forum 2013” (Seoul, South Korea) and delivered a report “Dealing with a nuclear North Korea” at its plenary session. The discussion at the Forum centered on the impact of the accident at Japan's Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant on public attitudes towards nuclear energy in Northeast Asia and on increasing support for non-proliferation regime in view of the recent developments in North Korea.

    Forum “Oil and Gas Dialogue” holds a presentation on Forecast World Energy 2030, prepared by BP Group of Companies. Vladimir V. Drebentsov, Chief Economist for Russia and the CIS, BP plc, Vice President for External Affairs, BP Russia, spoke at the presentation at IMEMO RAN. The presentation was chaired by Academician Natalia I. Ivanova, First Deputy Director of IMEMO RAN.

SEMINARS

    November 14-15, 2013
    On November 14-15, 2013 Ivan V.Danilin, Head of IMEMO`s Section for Innovation Policy, took part in Seminar "Developing strategic thinking in the EU. Global Trends 2030" in Brussels. The Seminar was organized by European Strategy and Policy Analysis System (ESPAS) - a foresight network of global experts and EU think tanks, IMEMO`s long-term partner.
    During the Seminar experts from EU, US, Russia, India, Brazil and ther nations discussed future trends, challenges and opprotunities for long-term development of European Union.

    The Center for Comparative Socio-Economic and Socio-Political Studies held a workshop within the framework of an on-going seminar dedicated to the analysis of political, social and cultural transformations in the contemporary world. The current series is dedicated to social and political change in Western and non-Western democracies. The workshop was dedicated to the analysis of Swedish politics, economy and society.
    Dr. Igor Grishin focused on the evolution of the Swedish social democratic model and on its legacy. Dr. Alexei Volkov commented on the economic situation during the crisis and post crisis years. Dr. Natalia Plevako (Institute of Europe, RAS) spoke on the immigration problem and its implications for Swedish society, and on the characteristics of the Swedish social model. Dr. Konstantin Voronov dwelt on the influence of external factors on home politics and on the challenges of deindustrialization for national security.

The current series is dedicated to social and political change in Western democracies. The workshop focused on the political and social situation in the USA. Dr. Nickita Zagladin, head of the Center, presented a paper on the changes in the American political system and their international context.

(History), Georgy Mirsky, Professor and Doctor of Historical Science at IMEMO; Emil Pain, Professor of the High School of Economics, Director General of the Center for Ethno-Political Studies, have presented their views at the seminar.

    The Center for Comparative Socio-Economic and Socio-Political Studies held a workshop within the framework of an on-going seminar dedicated to trends of social and political change and to methodological problems of analyzing political, social and cultural transformations in the contemporary world. The current series is dedicated to social and political change in Western democracies. The workshop focused on the political and economic situation in Germany, with special attention to the changes in the political landscape and to the prospects of the German economy. Prof. Irina Busighina (MGIMO University), Dr. Vladislav Belov (Centre for German Studies of the Institute of Europe, RAS) and Dr. Alexei Kuznetsov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, IMEMO, took the floor.

    The Center for Comparative Socio-Economic and Socio-Political Studies held a workshop within the framework of an on-going seminar dedicated to trends of social and political change and to methodological problems of analyzing political, social and cultural transformations in the contemporary world. The discussion focused on contemporary political populism. Dr. Grigory Vainshtein delivered a paper on “The populist trend in contemporary Europe”. Researchers from the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Dr. Vladimir Shveitser and Dr. Natalia Plevako) and from IMEMO (Dr. Anna Badaeva, theory of politics section, and researchers from the Centre for European studies and from the hosting Center) contributed to the discussion which focused on conceptualizing the populist phenomena and on its key characteristics.

    IMEMO Deputy Director corresponding member of RAS V. Mikheev and Dr V. Shvydko, Head of Japanese Studies Section, met with a delegation of Japanese experts headed by Mr. Toshiro Iijima, Deputy Director General of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). Russian and Japanese scholars discussed the prospects of cooperation between IMEMO and JIIA in the context of recent developments in Russia-Japan political and business relations.

    IMEMO President A. Dynkin and a group of IMEMO experts met a delegation of scholars from China’s leading research centers.
    The Chinese delegation was headed by President of the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Dr. Li Yongquan, and included leading experts from the Chinese Academy of Contemporary International Relations and the Shanghai Academy of International Studies.
    Experts from IMEMO and Chinese research centers discussed implementation of large-scale projects in the Russian Far East, Russia-China trade and economic relations, cooperation between the two countries in bordering provinces and in international politics.

    IMEMO Deputy Director corresponding member of RAS V. Mikheev and professor A. Fedorovskiy, Head, Pacific Studies Section met with delegation of South Korean experts Headed by Mr. Park Kwangho, Director of Analysis Department, Ministry of Unification. Mr. Kang Seobin from Department on political and military affairs of Ministries of Unification, Lieutenant Colonel Lee Jiho, assistant of the secretary of the president of the Republic of Korea and Mr. Yoh Sangkey, 1-st secretory of the ROK Embassy in Moscow were among the members of the delegation. IMEMO experts presented their views on security and political trends on the Korean Peninsula as well as on the prospects for Korea unification. Russian and South Korean experts discussed also main results of Russia-ROK Summit in Seoul and key issues of Russia-South Korean bilateral relations.

    Delegation of high ranked experts from Ministries of Unification, Strategy & Finance, Knowledge & Economy, Labor, Law, and some other ministers and regional governments of the Republic of Korea visited IMEMO on September 10, 2013. IMEMO experts presented their views on social and political issues of transition from administrative to market economy and on prospects for Russia-Korea relations. Dr. V. Komarovskiy, Head of Department for Social and Labor Studies, Dr. E. Sadovaya, Head of Section for Labor and Employment Studies, Dr. A. Ryabov, Editor-in–Chief “ME&MO” monthly, Prof. A. Fedorovskiy, Head of Section for Pacific studies took part in the meeting and present their views on discussed issues.

    Members of the joint workshop group set up by IMEMO and the Chinese Institute of Contemporary International Relations met on September 9, 2013 to discuss the joint project “New Security Pattern for the Pacific” and work on its final report. The meeting was presided over by deputy director IMEMO, corresponding member V. Mikheev and Director of the Institute of World Policy Studies Dr. Zhai Kun.

    The meeting with representatives of the Chinese business community was held in IMEMO RAN. The parties discussed the issues of the economic situation in Russia and China, the state of Russian social services, the investment climate and export of hydrocarbons. Questions of US foreign policy in the Asia Pacific region were raised separately.

    IMEMO scholars held a meeting with Dr. Ken Jinbo, associate professor at Keio University (Tokyo), an expert on security issues in Asia and the Pacific. The meeting was held within the framework of traditional cooperation between IMEMO and the Japanese Embassy in Moscow. Dr. K. Jinbo’s presentation ("2030 Strategic Trends in Asia-Pacific: Implication for Japan-Russia Relations") was followed by round table discussion of various issues related to international security and possible cooperation between Russia and Japan to ensure greater stability in this region.
